As students prepare for the first day of school next week, medical experts from Aspirus Health are warning parents and teens against reaching for energy drinks to combat early morning fatigue.
With early alarms, homework, athletics and busy schedules, many students seek an energy boost. However, energy drinks often contain high amounts of caffeine, added sugar and other stimulants that can negatively affect sleep, mood, hydration and heart health.
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends adolescents avoid energy drinks entirely. “Medical professionals are especially concerned for students because they may mask fatigue without addressing what the body actually needs: sleep, hydration, and a balanced diet,” said Rachel Rindt, family nurse practitioner with Aspirus Health.
For many kids and teens, caffeine can worsen sleep issues, is linked to anxiety and can make focusing more difficult in the long run.
Parents and caregivers should monitor their child’s caffeine intake by reading nutrition labels on energy drinks, canned coffee, soda, pre-workout supplements and caffeinated snacks.
Experts recommend establishing healthy routines by maintaining consistent bedtimes, engaging in physical activity, limiting screen time, drinking plenty of water and eating nutritious meals.
These foundational habits provide the sustained energy students need for academic success without the risks associated with energy drinks.
