High School
In football last night…
- Calumet opened its season with a hard-fought 14-7 victory over Houghton. After a scoreless first half, the Copper Kings opened the second half with two nearly identical scoring drives – both 43 yards long, and both capped by short Keith Koivisto touchdown runs. The 14-0 lead held until late in the game, when the Gremlins found paydirt with a quick drive powered by a 58-yard Brody Donnely pass play that set up a seven-yard scoring strike. With three minutes remaining, Houghton recovered an onside kick at the 50-yard line, but Levi Lypsinmaa sacked Donnelly for a 12-yard loss. The Gremlins turned the ball over on downs, and the Copper Kings ran out the clock. Hear the game replay here.

Cross Country
At Marquette’s Dale Phillips Invitational 5k yesterday, the top local boys finisher was Houghton’s Branden Van Karsen in sixth place. Holly Cooke of the Gremlins placed third on the girls side. See full high school and JV results here.
Boys Soccer
Houghton moved to 5-0 on the season with a 6-2 victory at Three Lakes. Eli Garnell scored a hat trick, and Colin Spencer, Daniel Lounibos and Simas Lebeliunas also added goals. Lucas Mayra and Rowan Dellinger each had two assists.
College Volleyball
At the UP North Tournament in Marquette…
- Michigan Tech suffered its second-straight tough five-set loss, falling 3-2 (25-19, 17-25, 23-25, 25-19, 11-15) to sixth-ranked Saint Cloud State yesterday. Rachel Zurek recorded 23 kills. The Huskies face Cal State East Bay this morning, and Winona State this afternoon.
- Northern Michigan lost 3-1 (25-21, 17-25, 17-25, 9-25) to Minnesota Duluth last night. The Wildcats will take on Tiffin this afternoon.
College Soccer
- The Michigan Tech women’s soccer team opened its season with a 2-0 loss to Minnesota Duluth last night. The Huskies will host Saint Cloud State tomorrow at noon.
- The Northern Michigan women’s soccer team scored three late goals, and stunned 16th-ranked Saint Cloud State 3-2 yesterday afternoon. The Wildcats entertain Minnesota Duluth tomorrow at noon.
- The NMU men’s soccer team will visit Tiffin tomorrow.
MLB
Tarik Skubal returned to Comerica Park last night, and helped pitch the Dodgers to a 2-1 victory over the Tigers. Skubal struck out seven over six innings, and gave up a Max Clark triple that sent Eduardo Valencia home with Detroit’s only run. Tigers starter Drew Anderson was equally effective, pitching scoreless ball into the fifth. Drew Sommers relieved him and allowed the tying run. Freddie Freeman’s RBI single off Jacob Waguespack in the top of the eighth inning was the game-winner.
The Tigers have lost 11 of their last 13 games, and continue that home set against the Dodgers this afternoon. Keider Montero will start against Blake Snell. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers shut down the Rangers 6-1 last night. Logan Henderson turned in seven dominant innings, allowing a run on just one, and striking out seven. William Contreras drove in three runs, and Christian Yelich had three hits.
The Brewers host the Rangers again tonight. Shane Drohan will pitch against Cal Quantrill.
Jonathan Ornelas is no longer with the Brewers. He cleared waivers after being designated for assignment, and elected to become a free agent.
NFL
The Packers scored 18 points in the fourth quarter, and concluded their exhibition schedule with a 42-38 comeback victory over the Cardinals last night. Third-string quarterback Kyle McCord played the entire game for Green Bay, and threw four touchdown passes.
The Lions wrap up their preseason schedule this afternoon at 1:00 at Indianapolis.
