In September, Michigan’s law enforcement community will begin the Flame of Hope Torch Run from Copper Harbor to Detroit. As officers, deputies and state troopers carry the flame across the state, towns, cities and villages will host 5-kilometer races that engage communities in supporting Special Olympics of Michigan.
The Houghton Police Department will host one of the first local races on Sept. 12, as the torch begins its journey from Copper Harbor. These coordinated events operate together to raise money and awareness for Special Olympics while communities participate in supporting their local area teams.
Area 39 Special Olympics, which returned to the region last year after a hiatus, operates from two central hubs serving the Copper Country and surrounding counties. “We kind of operate out of two hubs here in Houghton, which kind of includes the three county area that we consider a copper country. Then down in Ironwood as well that includes Gogebic and Ontonagon counties,” said Mike Behrmann, co-director of Area 39 Special Olympics.
The organization brings together more than 60 individual athletes of different abilities for competition and camaraderie. Area 39 teams compete in bowling, snowshoe, track and field, basketball, swimming and more. Last year’s return proved successful, with approximately 40 to 45 volunteers supporting the teams. “They were thrilled, had such a good time and promise they’d be back next year. And the athletes, it’s all positive. There’s really just joy in everyone’s hearts and faces,” said Naomi Behrmann, co-director.
The City of Houghton’s 5K entry fee is $30 for the fun run and walk, which is untimed and leisurely. “We’re not picky who sponsors us, just businesses, personal, whatever. But we do need a lot of people to donate and sponsor,” said Lt. Nick Roberts of the Houghton Police Department.
Funds raised throughout the state are dispersed to area teams during athletic seasons through grants and support for regional and state tournaments.
