MLB
The Tigers fell to the Pirates 4-1 last night. Detroit took a brief lead when Brett Callahan hit his first major league home run in the top of the fifth. Pittsburgh responded with three runs off Keider Montero in the bottom of the inning, after Montero had pitched four perfect frames to open the game.
The Tigers wrap up that series in Pittsburgh this afternoon. Jackson Jobe will start against Paul Skenes. Coverage will begin at 12:10 on 99.3 The Lift.
The White Sox also lost, but the Twins and Guardians won. Minnesota moves into second place in the American League Central Division, four games out. Detroit and Cleveland are a half-game back, tied for third.
After having been designated for assignment, Trei Cruz has cleared waivers, and been sent back to Toledo.
The Brewers dismantled the Mariners 22-0 last night. The lopsided score went into the record books, tying the club mark for most runs scored in a game, and setting a new record for the most lopsided victory. In fact, it ties for the most lopsided result in the major leagues since the Philadelphia Quakers blanked the Indiana Hoosiers 24-0 in 1887. The Crew held a slim 1-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth, when they broke it open with five runs. They added five more in the sixth, two in the seventh, and nine in the eighth. Their 22 hits included home runs by Christian Yelich, David Hamilton, Jake Bauers and Luis Lara. Hamilton and Lara each had three hits, and Garrett Mitchell had four. Hamilton, Lara and Yelich each drove in four runs.
The Brewers entertain the Mariners again tonight. Dustin May will pitch against Logan Gilbert.
Cooper Pratt played seven good innings in a rehab assignment for Milwaukee’s High-A Timber Rattlers last night. He could rejoin the Brewers as early as today. He’s recovering from a strained hamstring.
