Houghton Building Supplies/Stanton edged REL/Mohawk Technology 2-1 in last night’s Copper Country Twilight Baseball League post-season tournament play-in game.
Stanton will face top-seeded Garnet Garage in one semifinal series beginning Tuesday. Craig Heinonen Coldwell Banker will play Northern Driveline in the other.
MLB
Framber Valdez turned in a strong outing as the Tigers routed the Mariners 11-0 yesterday. Valdez allowed five hits over seven innings. Kyle Finnegan and Brennan Hanifee completed the shutout. Dillion Dingler got Detroit off to a quick start with a two-run homer in the first inning – his third in the past three games. Kevin McGonigle also homered. Dingler and Colt Keith each had three hits.
The Tigers open a series in San Francisco tonight. Keider Montero will start for Detroit. Coverage will begin at 9:50 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers dispatched the Pirates 5-2 yesterday. Newcomer Dustin May allowed two runs on three hits over six innings. Jackson Chourio and Gary Sánchez homered.
The Brewers welcome the Twins tonight. Shane Drohan will start against Zebby Matthews.
NFL
The Detroit Lions have made running back Jahmyr Gibbs a very rich man. Gibbs has agreed to a three-year contract extension worth $66.75 million, although incentives could push the value to as much as $75.75 million. Reports say that $51.5 million is guaranteed. Gibbs becomes the highest-paid running back in NFL history.
