The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service will apply lampricide to the Dead River and Carp River in Marquette from Aug. 11-20 to control invasive sea lamprey populations.
The KBIC Natural Resources Department reminded the community of the treatment, which targets sea lamprey that invaded the Great Lakes in the early 20th century via ballast tanks in cargo ships.
A single spawning pair of sea lamprey can produce more than 100,000 eggs. Infested areas require regular lampricide treatments to manage the population.
Sea lamprey have devastated Great Lakes fishing by preying on large fish species including walleye, lake trout, whitefish, ciscoes and burbot. The lampricide treatment is essential to protecting the region’s fishery.
