The Tigers pummeled the Athletics 13-1 last night. Detroit scratched scheduled starter Casey Mize, to prevent a potential injury before the trade deadline. Instead, they opted for a bullpen night, and four relievers held the A’s to just three hits. The game was close until the Tigers erupted for seven runs in the eighth inning, ignited by rookie Max Clark’s RBI double. Clark had three hits and scored twice in his major league debut. Kevin McGonigle and Dillon Dingler homered, and Ben Malgeri hit his first major league round-tripper. Dingler drove in four runs. Javier Báez had three hits and drove in three runs.
The Tigers visit the Athletics again tonight. Framber Valdez will start against Jack Perkins. Coverage will begin at 9:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
Detroit did some major roster reshuffling yesterday. To make room for Clark on the major league roster, Matt Vierling was placed on the injured list. He’s dealing with a bruised foot. To make room on the 40-man roster, pitcher Andre Granillo was designated for assignment. Granillo had been claimed off waivers from the Nationals earlier in July, and had spent all of his brief tenure with the organization in Toledo. Reliever Enmanuel De Jesus was called up from Toledo, and Brenan Hanifee was sent down.
Will Vest is done for the season. He and the team had originally hoped that time and rest would heal the stress fracture in his elbow. Instead, surgery was needed. While he’s recovering, he’ll also undergo a second surgery to repair some hip damage.
Jake Bauers’ three-run homer powered the Brewers to a 6-2 victory over the Angels last night. Brice Turang added a two-run shot. Shane Drohan allowed two runs on four hits over six innings, and struck out seven.
The Brewers visit the Angels again tonight. Robert Gasser will pitch against José Soriano.
Milwaukee brought reliever D.L. Hall off the injured list before last night’s game. Thomas Pannone was designated for assignment.
Triathlon
The annual Verna Mize Triathlon takes place today. Activities will be based at Houghton’s Ray Kestner Waterfront Park. They include the Main Mize, with a half-mile swim, an eight-mile bike and a four-mile run; the Maxi Mize, with a 1.5k swim, a 40k bike and a 10k run; and the Mini Mize, with a quarter-mile swim, a four-mile bike, and a two-mile run.
