Fast Pitch Softball
On the opening night of the Copper Country Fast Pitch Softball League tournament last night…
Superior Service defeated Figaro’s Pizza 11-6 in the play-in game. Josie Heinonen was the winning pitcher and Kaylee Newsom took the loss. Heinonen struck out 6 and Newsom struck out 11. For Superior Service, Raili Marcotte had three singles, Josie Heinonen had a double and a single, and Molly Bugni and Mackenzie Ekdahl each had two singles. For Figaro’s Pizza, Molly Erkkila had three singles and Kira Diaz had two singles.
Gold Standard then defeated Superior Service 7-4 in a semifinal game. Olivia Shank was the winning pitcher, and Reagan Moyle took the loss. Shank struck out eight, and Moyle struck out five. For Gold Standard, Emily Jokela had a home run and three triples, Maria Chezick had a home run, Ashlyn Steves had a double and a single and Olivia Shank had two singles. For Superior Service, Josie Heinonen had a double and a single, Sylvia Allen and Mel Baker each had a double, and Raili Marcotte had a single.
Northern Wishes dispatched Moyle/Finnish Coat 13-9 in eight innings in the other semifinal. Janet Mattila and Rosalie Kangas combined for the win in the circle, and Claire Mettlach was the losing pitcher. For Northern Wishes, Naomi Frahm had a double and two singles, Rosalie Kangas had a double and a single, Sylvia Aho had three singles and Kim Aho and Larissa Peterson each had two singles. For Moyle/Finnish Coat, Ann Hardin had two doubles and a single, Ashlee Johnson had a double and a single, Brynn Arko had a double and two singles, and Clea Ollanketo had a double and a single.
Northern Wishes will face Gold Standard in the championship game tomorrow at 7:00 at the Bone Yard in Lake Linden. Gold Standard will be the home team, based on its regular-season record.
MLB
The Tigers dropped their third straight game last night, 8-5 to the Orioles. Keider Montero struggled into the fifth inning, and was charged with six runs on nine hits. Hao-Yu Lee drove in two runs for Detroit.
The Tigers host the Orioles again tonight. Troy Melton will start against Dean Kremer. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
Kerry Carpenter has been placed on the injured list. He’s been dealing with a bruised foot. Eduardo Valencia has been called back up from Toledo to fill in.
The Brewers were held to just three hits in a 3-0 loss to the Giants. Brandon Sproat gave up three runs on six hits over six innings.
The Brewers visit the Giants again tonight. Logan Henderson will pitch against Landen Roupp.
NFL
Veteran linebacker Troy Reeder is joining the Lions as a free agent. Reeder has made 38 starts over his seven seasons in the league, mostly with the Rams. He’s considered an outstanding special teams player.

In Copper Country Horseshoe League play last evening…
- Dreamland shaded Erkkila Forest Products 5-4.
- Eva’s Hideaway nipped Mohawk Superette 5-4.
- Loading Zone outscored Ahmeek Fire Department 7-2.
- Calumet Electronics downed Bucko’s Party Store 6-3.
- Sayen’s Auto outscored Harter’s Party Store 7-2.
- Laurium One shaded Luigi’s Bar 5-4.
Triathlon
Registration continues until 5:00 Friday afternoon for Saturday’s Verna Mize Triathlon. Activities will be based at Houghton’s Ray Kestner Waterfront Park. They include the Main Mize, with a half-mile swim, an eight-mile bike and a four-mile run; the Maxi Mize, with a 1.5k swim, a 40k bike and a 10k run; and the Mini Mize, with a quarter-mile swim, a four-mile bike, and a two-mile run.
