MLB
Casey Mize struggled, as the Tiges fell to the Phillies 4-2 Saturday. Mize labored into the sixth inning, and gave up all four Philly runs on five hits. Eduardo Valencia homered for Detroit, and Matt Vierling had three hits.
The Tigers conclude that home set against the Phillies today. Tarik Skubal will start against Zack Wheeler. Coverage will begin at 1:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers suffered a pair of one-run losses to the Pirates Saturday. In the opener, Pittsburgh scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh off Chad Patrick and Aaron Ashby to claim a 7-6 comeback victory. Jake Bauers and Sal Frelick homered for the Crew. In the nightcap, Brian Reynolds’ sixth-inning RBI single off Shane Drohan was the difference in a 3-2 game. Brice Turang doubled home both Milwaukee runs in the fifth.
The Brewers wrap up that home set against the Pirates this afternoon. Robert Gasser will start against Paul Skenes.
Milwaukee has added starter Kyle Harrison to the injured list with left forearm tightness. That opened a roster spot for Gasser to be recalled for today’s start. Gasser is filling in for Jacob Misiorowski, who was pulled because of arm fatigue. Misiorowski will also sit out next week’s All-Star Game.
Two shortstops led off the opening round of the MLB Draft Saturday. The White Sox used the first pick to take UCLA’s Roch Cholowsky.The Rays selected high school shortstop Grady Emerson with the second.
The Tigers used the 22nd overall pick to claim Coastal Carolina pitcher Cameron Flukey. He had once been projected to go higher in the draft, but his stock slipped after he missed a chunk of last season with a rib injury.
The Brewers invested the 25th pick in high school shortstop Trey Ebel. He joins brother Brady, who was Milwaukee’s first-round pick last year. Their dad, Dino, is the Dodgers’ third base coach.
The first four rounds were completed Saturday. The draft will conclude today.
NBA
Guard Gary Trent Jr. will stay with the Bucks. He’s agreed to a new four-year, $64 million contract.
Guts Frisbee
The 68th annual International Frisbee Tournament concludes today at the Driving Park. The competition includes several local teams, including the defending champion Shottle Bop squad. Elimination matches will begin around 10:00, with the title game set for late afternoon. The public is welcome, at no charge.
