MLB
It took eight years for catcher Eduardo Valencia to climb through the Tigers’ farm system. He finally made his major league debut for Detroit last night, and became just the 10th Tiger in history to homer in his first big league at-bat. Jake Rogers and Zach McKinstry also homered in Detroit’s 4-1 win over the Athletics. Framber Valdez turned in seven dominant innings, allowing a run on three hits, and striking out nine.
The Tigers have won eight of their last nine games, and open a home set against the Phillies tonight. Jack Flaherty will start against Aaron Nola. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
Detroit remains seven games under .500, but now trails the White Sox and Guardians by just 4.5 games in the weak American League Central Division.
Valencia was brought up to back up Rogers while starting catcher Dillon Dingler recovers from taking a foul tip on his right hand in Wednesday’s game. Dingler has not been placed on the injured list, and is considered day-to-day. To make room on the roster, Jahmai Jones was designated for assignment.
The Brewers downed the Cardinals 8-4 last evening. Jake Bauers and Brice Turang homered. Logan Henderson returned from the injured list and pitched into the sixth innings, allowing three runs.
To open a roster slot for Henderson, reliever Garrett Stallings was sent back to Nashville.
After taking three of four from Saint Louis, the Brewers open a series at Pittsburgh tonight. Brandon Sproat will start against Braxton Ashcraft.
NHL
Emmitt Finnie has been named the Red Wings’ Rookie of the Year by the Detroit Sports Media group. Finnie recorded 30 points while playing in all 82 of the Wings’ games this season.
The impasse between Detroit captain Dylan Larkin and the team continues. Larkin has demanded a trade, but initially provided a list of only three teams – the Panthers, Wild and Golden Knights – that he would agree to join. He has reportedly added the Stars to that list, but the Wings say they’ll need more options to accommodate him.
