The Keweenaw Community Foundation announced Wednesday it received an anonymous donation establishing two new endowment funds to preserve historic Copper Country landmarks.
The funds will support preservation efforts at the Copper Country Firefighters Memorial Museum and the Calumet Theatre Building. “These buildings are more than historical structures, they are community assets,” the anonymous donor told the foundation. “They belong to the people of Calumet, and we have both the opportunity and responsibility to steward them for future generations.”
The Calumet Theatre has showcased live entertainment since 1900. Today, the nonprofit manages shows, programs and tours with dedicated members and volunteers.
The Copper Country Firefighters Memorial Museum operates from the former Red Jacket Fire Station, built in 1898. The museum memorializes volunteer firefighters and provides educational programming for the community.
