Summer in Hancock doesn’t fade when the Fourth of July passes. Instead, the city shifts into high gear with a lineup of community events designed to keep residents and visitors engaged through the season and beyond.
The Canal Rock Concert Series kicks off Hancock’s summer entertainment calendar. After Juhannus celebrations wrapped up, the city launched the outdoor concert series at Porvoo Park with Splyt Shift, and more local bands to follow.
“We’re back to action on July 10th with Bling Crosby down at Porvoo Park. So that’s six until nine. And we do that every Friday except for key ingredients, which is the following Friday and that is July 17th,” said Todd Gast, Downtown Development Authority coordinator for the City of Hancock.
Key Ingredients takes over Quincy Street on July 17, celebrating local restaurants and musicians during Canal Run weekend. The 51st annual Canal Run draws hundreds of participants to Hancock for multiple race options.
“We’ve got a lot of different races that you can still get on board with. The 10-mile Bob Olson run. We’ve got the half marathon,” Gast said.
Beyond the marquee events, Hancock Thursdays have become a summer staple. An all-new Hancock Thursday Farmers Market features more than 20 vendors each week. Then starting on July 23rd the market sets up alongside outdoor movie nights in downtown Hancock.
“We have six movies that we’ve selected genres for and that our community voted on,” Gast said of the Thursday night programming.
Even as summer unfolds, Hancock’s planning extends well into fall and winter. The city moved its End of Summer Celebration to Labor Day weekend this year, scheduling it for Saturday, Sept. 5, rather than the traditional weekend after Labor Day.
“Labor Day is a little bit late this year. We thought that having end of summer celebration the weekend after, which would be probably around the 12th, we’re having it on Labor Day weekend,” Gast explained.
Looking further ahead, Hancock Lights the Night—the city’s holiday celebration—requires months of advance planning. The event transforms the Hancock Campground into a winter wonderland.
“Planning on this event for Hancock Lights the Night takes months of preparation. So we’ve been asking our community to come on out to help us make all of those magical moments happen at our Hancock Campground,” Gast said.
The success of Hancock’s event calendar relies on community support. Volunteers, local businesses, organizations, and city departments including police, fire, and public works all contribute to making these gatherings possible.
