The Chassell Recreation Club’s recent achievement of 501(c)(3) nonprofit status marks a turning point for the community’s outdoor recreation network. The designation positions the organization to pursue grant funding that will fuel future trail development and maintenance.
The trail system thrives through collaboration. Chassell Township manages 67 acres of pathways, while private landowners provide easements for the upper portions of classic ski and snowshoe routes. Volunteers keep all trails groomed and accessible year-round.
Winter enthusiasts can explore 5.2 miles of ski trails, including the newly added Larson Loop on the northwest side of the system. Snowshoers have 10 kilometers of dedicated trails to discover.
Summer brings fresh opportunities. A four-kilometer fitness trail with 10 stations winds behind the Chassell Heritage Center, made possible by a grant from the Copper Shores Community Health Foundation. The trail encourages visitors to stay active while enjoying the natural landscape.
Recent construction has transformed the recreation offerings further. A Destination Development Grant from Visit Keweenaw, matched by funding from the Chassell Recreation millage, enabled the township to build a bicycle skills park and beginner-level mountain biking trail behind the Heritage Center. Ebb & Flow Trailworks completed the construction, and community interest has already surged.
The Chassell Recreation Club emphasizes that physical activity strengthens both body and mind. Whether visitors come for serious training or casual walks, the trails welcome all fitness levels. Learn more about the Chassell Recreation Club and recreation in Chassell Township here.
