Jack Flaherty pitched shutout ball into the sixth inning, as the Tigers blanked the Rangers 3-0 Saturday. Flaherty allowed just three hits, and earned his second win of the season. Keider Montero pitched the final three innings to get the save. Riley Greene’s two-run homer in the first inning provided all the runs Detroit needed.
The Tigers conclude that series at Texas this afternoon. Casey Mize will start against Kumar Rocker. Coverage will begin at 3:05 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers dropped a 4-3 decision to the Diamondbacks Saturday. Brandon Woodruff gave up a three-run homer in the first inning, then left the game in the fourth when he experienced discomfort in his right shoulder. Woodruff missed time earlier this season because of shoulder inflammation, and manager Pat Murphy speculated that he could be headed back to the injured list. Christian Yelich and Jackson Chourio homered.
The Brewers visit the Diamondbacks again today. Brandon Sproat will pitch against Eduardo Rodriguez.
Milwaukee has placed reliever Joel Kuhnel back on the injured list with a right shoulder problem. Craig Yoho has been brought up from Nashville to fill in. Starter Coleman Crow has begun a rehab stint with the Sounds. He’s recovering from a right forearm strain.
Three Tigers and two Brewers are headed to the All-Star Game. Neither team has a player in the starting lineup, but Detroit outfielder Riley Greene has been selected for his third appearance, and catcher Dillon Dingler and rookie shortstop Kevin McGonigle will make their debuts. Two of them could be promoted – Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge will miss the game because of an injury, and Royals shortstop Bobby Witt, Junior, is dealing with some physical problems. Milwaukee will be represented by pitcher Jacob Misiorowski and catcher William Contreras. Misiorowski has indicated that he may elect not to pitch, to maintain his place in the Brewers’ rotation.
