Before the Copper Country Firefighters Tournament tipped off this weekend at Gipp Ice Arena, the region’s fire departments paused to honor fallen firefighters and recognize outstanding service across the community.
The Copper Country Volunteer Firefighters Association held a moment of silence for firefighters lost during the past year before announcing recipients of several service awards.
Two nurses who intervened at the scene of a roadside accident in late May earned the Citizens of the Year Award. Ashley Burcar was traveling when she spotted a man on the side of the road. After discovering he had been in a crash and that his wife remained in the vehicle, Burcar began assessing him for injuries. A second nurse, Jenny Meumlemans, joined her, and together they provided care until first responders arrived.
“These two brave nurses demonstrated exceptional dedication and care,” said Annette Butina, secretary of the Copper Country Volunteer Firefighters Association. “The family is eternally grateful for their quick actions and professionalism during this time of emergency.”
Two firefighters from the Quincy-Franklin-Hancock Fire Department also received recognition. Dennis Raasio and Dave Kumlin each earned the association’s Achievement Award for years of dedicated service.
Hancock City Fire Department received the Department of the Year award, a nomination that came directly from a city resident.
“This department has made such a community presence in Hancock,” Butina said. “In their efforts in their community and fundraising, they’re always available to help other departments and communities in need, and they want you to know it doesn’t go unnoticed.”
Houghton Fire Chief Eric James earned the Firefighter of the Year Award. James was elevated to the role of fire chief in 2025.
“With the cooperation of other fire chiefs, Chief James established automatic mutual aid agreements with Hurontown, South and South Range Fire Departments,” Butina said. “This paid off on May 27, 2026, when a structure fire was called in at 7:17 a.m.”
The Copper Country Volunteer Firefighters Association works to connect departments and foster collaboration across the region. Its member departments span Baraga, Houghton, Ontonagon and Keweenaw counties.
