The Tigers’ bullpen failed again, as Detroit lost 8-5 to the Astros yesterday. Jack Flaherty returned from the injured list and tossed five shutout innings, striking out nine while allowing just two hits. He left with a 3-0 lead, powered by a two-run, first-inning homer by Zack McInstry. Houston’s comeback began when Tyler Holton gave up a two-run homer in the seventh. Former Tiger Isaac Paredes homered off Kyle Finnegan to tie the game in the eighth, and his single off Kenley Jansen broke the tie in the top of the 10th. Christian Walker’s three-run homer off Jansen sealed the win. Spencer Torkelson’s two-run shot in the bottom of the 10th, but Matt Vierling’s line drive to the left fielder with runners at the corners ended the game.

The Tigers visit the Yankees tonight. Casey Mize will start against Ryan Weathers. Coverage will begin at 6:40 on 99.3 The Lift.

To open a roster space for Flaherty, Enmanuel De Jesus was sent to Toledo.

Joel Kuhnel gave up three runs in the top of the 10th, as the Brewers fell to the Cubs 4-3 yesterday. Brandon Woodruff pitched shutout ball into the sixth, and allowed just one hit. He left with a 1-0 lead, thanks to a Gary Sánchez home run in the second inning. A wild pitch by Aaron Ashby tied the game in the seventh. Milwaukee scored twice in the bottom of the 10th, but the game ended when Sánchez grounded into a double play with the bases loaded.

The Brewers welcome the Reds tonight. Robert Gasser will pitch against Nick Lodolo.
