More than 75 volunteers helped the Keweenaw Outdoor Recreation Coalition remove 4,300 pounds of trash from the Keweenaw Peninsula during the organization’s sixth annual spring cleanup in May.
Volunteer groups spread across parks, beaches, trails, forest areas and roadsides throughout the region, tackling everything from roadside litter to known unauthorized dump sites. Among the 4,300 pounds of refuse collected were 27 used tires.
After the cleanup, volunteers joined KORC and event sponsors for an afternoon picnic at Donny Kilpela Park in Copper Harbor.
KORC works throughout the year to bring together Keweenaw communities, secure public access to lands across the region and organize conservation events and social gatherings centered around the outdoors.
The sixth annual KORC spring cleanup was supported by 5th & Elm Coffeehouse, Calumet-Keweenaw Sportsmen’s Club, Cross Country Sports, Downwind Sports, Eagle Harbor Inn, Erika Vye, Jim’s Foodmart, Keweenaw Coffee Works, Kitschy Spirit Records, Mohawk Superette, North Wind Books, Radio Keweenaw, Ramona’s Bakery, Rhythm Bike Shop, Slim’s Cafe, Small Craft, Steve Brimm Photography, Studio 13, Swift’s Hardware, The Forager & The Baker, The KinShip, The Genny, The Jampot, The Laughing Loon, Trails End Campground, U.P.
