The City of Houghton earned gold recognition from the Michigan Green Communities program for its environmental leadership and sustainability initiatives.
The city announced Monday it received the honor through the Michigan Green Communities Challenge, which evaluates municipal efforts in land use planning, water management, climate resilience, energy efficiency and community engagement.
Houghton accomplished several sustainability projects in recent years, including storm and sewer system improvements to enhance flood resilience, shoreline stabilization and energy-efficient lighting installation. The city also added trail and sidewalk connections to support safer, more active transportation.
“This honor recognizes work by Houghton’s leaders, departments and staff over many years that the city will continue to work toward,” said City Manager Eric Waara.
The Michigan Green Communities Challenge awards bronze, silver, gold or platinum honors to participating communities. The program recognized more than 68 communities throughout the Lower and Upper peninsulas for 2025 efforts.
Houghton earned gold recognition alongside 47 other communities. Neighboring Hancock and Marquette each received gold recognition in 2024.
Michigan Green Communities operates as a no-cost municipal program serving as a sustainability benchmarking network.
