A Hancock man drowned yesterday morning near the Portage Upper Entrance.
State Police troopers were called out around 9:30, after reports were received of a body in the water along the breakwall leading to the lighthouse, near McLain State Park.
The body was located by divers from the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office. Following positive identification, the family was notified.
An obituary received from the Memorial Chapel Funeral and Cremation Service identifies the victim as 57-year-old Daniel Carlson.
The preliminary investigation indicates that this was an accidental drowning that occurred earlier yesterday morning. State Police officials say no foul play is suspected, but an investigation continues.
MSP was assisted by the Houghton County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, U.S. Coast Guard, and Mercy EMS.
