During a year-long celebration of Hancock’s heritage, the city expects some visitors who’ve traveled far to arrive in the Sauna Belt.
The Juhannus celebration of the summer solstice will invite ambassadors from Finland and Estonia to provide educational presentations during the four days.
Ambassador Leena-Kaisa Mikkola from Finland will join her Estonian counterpart Kristjan Prikk on June 19 at Hancock Central High School. Throughout the weekend, festival-goers will see the pair at different activities and events, exploring the region’s rich history and meeting the descendants of immigrants who settled in the Copper Country.
Juhannus organizers also expect to organize speakers to explore Finno-Ugric heritage with presentations on Norway and Hungary as well.
The festival celebrates Hancock’s designation as a Finno-Ugric capital of culture, highlighting the deep connections between the Copper Country and Northern European communities. The event provides an opportunity for visitors to experience authentic cultural traditions and learn about the immigrant experience that shaped the region.
Juhannus celebrations in Hancock will begin on June 17, ending with a dance on Saturday before sending out the community on Sunday to explore the wider community’s history.
