High School
In baseball yesterday…
- Houghton dropped two to Negaunee, 9-0 and 2-1. The Gremlins collected just four hits in the opener, and five in the nightcap, including two by Max Bier, who doubled in Hancock’s only run.
- Calumet split its twinbill with Westwood. The Copper Kings lost the first game 8-7. Mason Burke drove in the winning run for the Patriots with a fielder’s choice in the bottom of the eighth inning. Andrew Juntilla had three hits for the Copper Kings. Calumet claimed the second game 4-0, in a game that was stopped after four innings. Joe Halonen held the Patriots hitless, while striking out seven. Luke Hamlin had two hits for Calumet.
- Hancock and Jeffers split their doubleheader. Hancock scored two runs in the top of the seventh to win the opener 6-4. Caleb Isaacson and Braydon Larson each had two hits and drove in two runs for the Bulldogs. Brogan Turner had three of Jeffers’ four hits, including a home run and a double. The Jets shut down the Bulldogs 1-0 in the nightcap. Turner went the distance on the mound to get the win, allowing just three hits. Ben Keranen took the tough loss for Hancock, scattering six hits, while striking out seven.
In softball…
- Payton Goldsworthy hit for the cycle, as Lake Linden-Hubbell blanked Calumet 11-0. Goldsworthy drove in five runs, and also got the win in the circle, striking out 13 over the game’s five innings. Chloe Coppo had two of Calumet’s three hits.
- Jeffers swept Westwood 18-7 and 26-10. In game one, Elli Kuntze had four hits and drove in three runs. Kylee Andrews had three hits, including a double and a triple, and drove two runs. Kuntze had six hits, scored six times, and drove in nine runs in game two.
- Forest Park lost two to Stephenson, 15-0 and 16-1.
At the WestPAC track championships at Westwood yesterday…
- The Houghton boys narrowly outpointed Negaunee to take the team title, with West Iron County fourth, Calumet sixth and Hancock eighth. Sam Roth of the Gremlins took the 100 and 200-meter runs. Eli Garnell took the 800, and Brandon Van Karsen the 1600. Eli Hongisto won the 300-meter hurdles. Jack Cooke took the high jump. Alex Ghiggia of the Wykons won the shot put.
- The Houghton girls finished a distant second to Negaunee. Calumet placed third, West Iron County fourth, and Hancock fifth. Norah Woodruff of the Gremlins claimed the 400-meter sprint. Holly Cooke took the 1600-meter run and Tessa Rautiola won the 3200. Hancock’s Alena Pietila won the 800-meter run, and Tatum Sporalski took the shot put. Bristol Shamion of the Wykons won the high jump.

In golf…
Houghton, Hancock and Calumet met at the Calumet Golf Club…
- The boys played a Ryder Cup-stlye tournament. Calumet took the title.
- The girls played a traditional match, with the Copper Kings sweeping the top five positions to earn the team title. Braylin Antilla medaled with a 51, and Lucy LaCross shot a 52. See full girls results here.
All-Copper Mountain Conference awards were handed out after yesterday’s meet at Watersmeet.
- Lake Linden-Hubbell won the boys conference championship, and dominated the boys honors. Brayden Beaudette was named Gofer of the Year, and Brett Poissant Coach of the Year. Tyler Axford, Brady Axford and Lukas Axfordwere named to the All-Conference team, along with Kale Cichosz from the Baraga team.
- Ironwood swept the girls honors. Summer Stites and Olivia Lockhart from Ontonagon were included on the All-Conference team.

NBA
The Thunder outscored the Spurs 122-113 last night. The Western Conference final is tied at a win per team.
The Cavaliers visit the Knicks tonight. New York leads the Eastern Conference final 1-0.
NHL
The Golden Knights downed the Avalanche 4-2 last night to win the opening game of the Western Conference final.
The Canadiens visit the Hurricanes to open the Eastern Conference final tonight.
MLB
The Tigers fell to the Guardians 3-2 in 10 innings last night. Cleveland scored one off Will Vest in the top of the ninth to tie the game, then plated two in the 10th off Tyler Holton. Zack McKinstry singled home Wenceel Pérez to get one back in the bottom of the 10th, but Detroit couldn’t complete the comeback.
The Tigers host the Guardians again this afternoon. Casey Mize will start against Joey Cantillo. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers completed a sweep of the Cubs with a 5-0 victory yesterday. Kyle Harrison struck out 11 over seven innings. William Contreras had three hits.
The Brewers have today off, and host the Dodgers tomorrow night. Logan Henderson will pitch against Justin Wrobleski.
