High School
In high school baseball Saturday…
- Jeffers v Hancock – no report.
- Houghton and Marquette split a doubleheader. The Sentinels scored 10 runs in the third inning of the opener, and cruised to an 11-1 victory. Game two was scoreless after the regulation seven innings. The Gremlins scored five runs in the top of the eighth, powered by doubles from Joel Durocher, Gunner Flachs and Tyler Jaehnig, and a bunt by Brycyn Nettel that turned into a triple. Marquette responded with four runs in the bottom of the inning. Davis Moyle relieved Jaehnig with one out and the bases loaded, and earned the save.
In softball, Hancock hosted the Copper Country Invitational at the Driving Park Saturday.
On the Givens Field…
- 12:00 – Houghton rallied to defeat Coleman 9-8. The Gremlins surged from behind with a six-run, two-out rally in the fifth inning. Ellie Hainault tripled in two runs, Kia Markham and Romi Mattson added RBI doubles, and Lexi Burns hit a two-run homer. After the Cougars tied the game in the top of the sixth, Markham’s bases-loaded single in the bottom of the inning drove in the game-winner, and the game ended with a Hougton double-play in the top of the ninth.
- 1:30 – Hancock blanked Rudyard 10-0. Lucy Biekkola struck out 10 batters, and allowed just four hits. The Bulldogs scored six runs in the opening inning. Alice Larson drove in three with a bases-loaded triple, and Emery Chynoweth doubled in two runs. Chynoweth finished with three hits and three RBI.
- 3:00 – Houghton fell to Menominee 7-4. The Maroons broke open a 4-4 game with three runs in the bottom of the fifth. Hainault had three hits for the Gremlins, including a triple.
- 4:30 – Hancock lost to Gogebic 5-3. The Speedgirls took control with four runs in the fifth inning.
On the Schaaf Field…
- 12:00 – Calumet lost to Menominee 21-11. The Maroons plated seven runs in the fourth inning, and added eight in the fifth.
- 1:30 – Lake Linden-Hubbell defeated Gogebic 9-2. Payton Goldsworthy had four hits, including two home runs, drove in five runs, and scored four. She also struck out 12 to earn the win in the circle.
- 3:00 – Calumet came from behind to edge Coleman 17-16. Bethany Garrow hit for the cycle, drove in three runs, and scored four. Danni Stites also homered. The Copper Kings broke through with six runs in the top of the seventh inning, with Garrow’s triple, doubles by Molly Erkkila, Chloe Coppo and Kaydence Christofferson, and RBI singles by Jailyn Poshak and Trinity Rajala.
- 4:30 – Lake Linden-Hubbell shut down Rudyard 13-4. Megan Sutherland drove in four runs with three hits. Taylor Goldsworthy also had three hits. Ashlyn Steves struck out eight to earn the complete-game win.
The Houghton girls soccer team heads to the Superior Dome today for matches against Boyne City and Gaylord.

In the NBA tournament Saturday…
- The Pistons lost to the Magic 113-105. Cade Cunningham scored 27 points and Tobias Harris added 23. Orlando leads the series 2-1, and will host game four on Monday. Coverage will begin at 7:35 on 99.3 The Lift.
- The Thunder overcame the Suns 121-109. Oklahoma City has a 3-0 lead in that series.
- The Knicks shut down the Hawks 114-98. That series is tied 2-2.
- The Timberwolves stopped the Nuggets 112-96. Minnesota is up 3-1 in that series.
Today…
- The Raptors host the Cavaliers. Cleveland leads that series 2-1.
- The Trail Blazers welcome the Spurs. San Antonio is up 2-1 in that set.
- The Celtics visit the 76ers. Boston holds a 2-1 series lead.
- The Rockets entertain the Lakers. L.A. leads that series 3-0.
NHL
In the NHL playoffs Saturday…
- The Hurricanes dispatched the Senators 4-2. Carolina sweeps that series 4-0.
- The Wild shaded the Stars 3-2 in overtime. That set is tied 2-2.
- The Penguins stayed alive with a 4-3 victory over the Flyers. Philadelphia is up 3-1 in that set.
Today…
- The Bruins welcome the Sabres. Buffalo leads that set 2-1.
- The Kings host the Avalanche. Colorado is up 3-0 in that series.
- The Lightning visit the Canadiens. Montreal has a 2-1 series lead.
- The Ducks entertain the Oilers. Anaheim holds a 2-1 series lead.
MLB
Tigers pitchers struggled again Saturday night in a 9-2 loss to the Reds. Jack Flaherty lasted just two innings, and gave up six runs on five hits, including three home runs. Kevin McGonigle and Spencer Torkelson homered for Detroit.
The Tigers wrap up that series in Cincinnati this afternoon. Keider Montero will start against Rhett Lowder. Coverage will begin at 1:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
Reliever Connor Seabold left Saturday’s game with what appeared to be an ankle injury. He’ll be examined today.
The Pirates scored three runs off Angel Zerpa and Grant Anderson in the top of the 10th inning, and downed the Brewers 6-3 Saturday.
The Crew host the Pirates again this afternoon. Kyle Harrison will pitch against Carmen Mlodzinski.
NFL
On the final day of the NFL Draft…
- The Lions took Michigan linebacker Jimmy Rolder in the fourth round, ASU cornerback Keith Abney II and Kentucky receiver Kendrick Law in the fifth, Texas Tech defensive tackle Skyler Gill-Howard in the sixth, and Tennessee edge rusher Tyre West in the seventh.
- The Packers selected Penn State edge rusher Dani Dennis-Sutton in the fourth round, Kentucky center Jager Burton in the fifth round, and Alabama cornerback Domani Jackson and Florida kicker Trey Smack in the sixth round.
