High School
In high school softball yesterday…
- Calumet split their doubleheader at Gogebic. The Kings used a late surge to take the opener 9-4. Calumet broke the game open with five runs in the sixth inning, highlighted by triples by Chloe Coppo and Danni Stites. Stites struck out 12 to earn the win in the circle. The Miners claimed the nightcap 9-0, holding Calumet to just four hits.
In baseball yesterday…
- Hancock swept Gladstone 8-3 and 12-3.

Lake Linden-Hubbell took both titles at the L’Anse Early Bird track meet yesterday.
- On the boys side, the Lakes easily outdistanced the host Purple Hornets. Dollar Bay-Tamarack City finished third, followed by Baraga, Hancock, Ewen-Trout Creek, the Copper Island Academy, Chassell, Jeffers and Ontonagon. Lake Linden’s Lukas Axford won the 400 and 1600-meter runs. L’Anse’s Connor Kemppainen claimed the 110 and 300-meter hurdles, and Taven Lewis took the discus throw and shot put.
- The girls side was closer but Lake Linden still cruised past Ewen-Trout Creek. Dollar Bay-Tamarack City was third, followed by Ontonagon, L’Anse, Hancock, Baraga, Chassell and Jeffers. Maddy Dudenas of the Lakes took the discus throw and shot put. Ontonagon’s Violet Amos won the 100, 200 and 400-meter dashes. Ewen’s Bree Besonen claimed the 800 and 1600-meter runs. Chassell’s Jordan Holombo won the 100 and 300-meter hurdles.

The boys golf meet scheduled for today at Norway has been canceled because of the rainy forecast.
The Houghton girls soccer team heads to the Superior Dome tomorrow for matches against Boyne City and Gaylord.

- The Sabres outscored the Bruins 3-1. Buffalo takes a 2-1 series lead.
- The Hurricanes edged the Senators 2-1. Carolina leads that set 3-0.
- The Avalanche dethroned the Kings 4-2. Colorado leads that series 3-0.

- The Canadiens host the Lightning. That series is tied 1-1.
- The Mammoth welcome the Golden Knights. That set is even at 1-1.

In the NBA tournament last night…
- The Hawks shaded the Knicks 109-108. Atlanta leads that series 2-1.
- The Raptors buried the Cavaliers 126-104. Cleveland now leads that series 2-1.
- The Timberwolves outscored the Nuggets 113-96. Minnesota leads that series 2-1.

- The 76ers welcome the Celtics. That set is tied 1-1.
- The Rockets host the Lakers. L.A. leads that set 2-0.

The Bucks are apparently moving quickly to fill the head coaching vacancy created by the retirement of Doc Rivers. There are reports that Milwaukee is finalizing a deal with Taylor Jenkins, who coached the Grizzlies from 2019 to 2025. Jenkins was an assistant on the Bucks’ staff in the 2018-2019 season, when the team won 60 regular-season games.
MLB
Spencer Torkelson’s solo home run in the bottom of the ninth powered the Tigers to a 5-4 win over the Brewers yesterday. Riley Greene’s two-run shot in the first got the Bengals off to a quick start, but the Brewers surged ahead with three in the seventh, keyed by a two-run Blake Perkins double. Jahmai Jones tied the game with a solo homer in the eighth, setting up Torkelson’s game-winner off Angel Zerpa in the ninth. Tarik Skubal gave up all four Milwaukee runs on seven hits over six innings.
The Tigers visit the Reds tonight. Framber Valdez will start against Andrew Abbott. Coverage will begin at 6:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers open a home set against the Pirates. Brandon Woodruff will pitch against Paul Skenes.
Milwaukee has brought pitcher Craig Yoho off the injured list, and assigned him to Nashville.
NFL
To the surprise of no one, the Raiders opened the NFL Draft last night by selecting Indiana quarterback Fernando Mendoza. The Jets followed with Texas Tech edge rusher David Bailey, and the Cardinals selected Notre Dame running back Jeremiyah Love. The Lions used the 17th pick on Clemson offensive tackle Blake Miller. The Packers did not have a first-round pick – they traded theirs to the Cowboys last fall as part of the Micah Parsons deal.
Rounds two and three take place tonight. The Lions have the 18th pick in the second round, and no pick in the third. The Packers have the 20th pick in the second round, and the 20th pick in the third.
