Joy Noelle Newman, 47, passed away peacefully at the Omega House with family at her side after a long battle with breast cancer.
Joy was born December 4th, 1978 in Virginia, MN to Carl “Dan” and Judith (Niska) Erickson. On November 6th, 1999 she married Michael Newman and together they raised five children.
She is preceded in death by her mother, Judith Erickson, mother-in-law, Virginia Newman, sister, Karen Erickson, niece and god daughter, Alicia Newman, brothers-in-law, Arthur Newman and Ryan Kilpela; sisters-in-law, Barbara Newman and Mary Newman; and her maternal and paternal grandparents.
She is survived by her husband, Michael Newman; her children, Abbigail (Garret) Parker, Mikayla (Nick) Voelker, Bennett (Lauren) Newman, Katelyn (Donnie) Nicely, and Ella (Adrik Turner) Newman; her honorary sons, Eli Kilpela and Clayton Walker; her grandchildren, Otto, Ellis, Oliver, Declan, Adeline, Wesley, and Baby Boy Voelker on the way; her Father, Carl “Dan” Erickson, her siblings, Keith (Kelly) Erickson, Katie (Mark) Curlew, Karl (Ruth Ann) Erickson, Jeff (Gina) Erickson, Julie (Sam) Newman, Jill (Michael) Haapala; father-in-law, Gordon Newman and numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, and extended family.
The family would like to extend thanks to the teams at the James Beck Cancer Center in Rhineland and Aspirus St. Lukes Hospital in Duluth and the Omega House for their compassionate care.
A visitation will be held for Joy on Sunday April 26, 2026 from 4:00-7:00pm at the First Apostolic Lutheran Church in Calumet, Michigan. A second visitation will be held on Monday April 27, 2026 from 11:00am-noon at the First Apostolic Lutheran Church in Calumet. Following the second visitation will be a funeral service in the church at 12:00pm with Pastor Mark Halonen to officiate. Joy will be laid to rest in Lake View Cemetery in May.
