Michigan Tech is looking for a new head women’s basketball coach.
Sam Clayton has stepped down after eight seasons at the helm. In a statement released by the university yesterday, she said that she’ll be pursuing a head coaching position at another institution closer to her family.
Clayton’s teams compiled a 138-88 overall record, and went 99-54 in the Great Lakes Athletic Conference. She was named GLIAC Coach of the Year for the 2020-21 season, after the Huskies won the GLIAC North Division, the GLIAC Tournament, and advanced to the NCAA Midwest Regional Semifinal.
Clayton was a team captain and All-GLIAC and All-American honoree while playing for Tech from 2009-13. She ranks eighth in career scoring with 1,434 points and also ranks in the top 10 in games played, three-point percentage, free throw percentage, and assists.
NHL
The Red Wings’ playoff hopes took another hit last night, with a 4-3 shootout loss to the Blue Jackets. Detroit took a 3-2 lead with Justin Faulk’s second goal of the night early in the third period, but Columbus’ Adam Fantilli tied the game with 17 seconds left in regulation. Each team scored twice in the shootout, before Zach Werenski’s goal ended it.
The Senators won last night, and maintained their hold on the final Eastern Conference playoff berth. Columbus’ victory keeps them two standings points off the pace – a point ahead of the Wings and the Islanders.
The Wings have four games left in the regular season, and host the Flyers tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
The Pistons host the Bucks tonight.
Detroit has signed center Tolu Smith to a two-year NBA contract. Smith has seen limited action this season on a two-way deal. To make room on the roster, the Pistons waived Bobi Klintman, who was their second-round pick in the 2025 draft.
The Bucks fell to the Nets 96-90 last night. A.J. Green scored 20.
Milwaukee will wrap up the season without Kevin Porter Jr. He underwent arthroscopic knee surgery yesterday. Team officials said he’d been playing through the injury for most of the season.
MLB
The Tigers lost their third straight game last night, falling to the Twins 4-2. Tarik Skubal tossed four scoreless innings, but was chased from the mound as Minnesota scored all four of their runs in the fifth. Kevin McGonigle drove in both of Detroit’s runs with a single in the seventh and a double in the ninth.
The Tigers continue that four-game set at Minnesota tonight. Framber Valdez will start against Bailey Ober. Coverage will begin at 7:15 on 99.3 The Lift.
Trey Sweeney’s potential return to Detroit has been delayed. His rehab from a shoulder sprain has been dialed back because of recurring discomfort.
The Brewers dropped a 3-2 decision to the Red Sox last night. Jacob Misiorowski threw five shutout frames, but was charged with all three Boston runs while leaving in the sixth.
The Brewers wrap up that series at Boston this afternoon. Shane Drohan will start against Sonny Gray.
