Raymond Francis Vizina, age 90, of Baraga, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 4, 2026.
He was born on August 8, 1935, in Baraga, Michigan, to Lawrence and Virginia (Cadeau) Vizina. Raymond lived a life rooted in hard work, faith, and devotion to family. He began his career as a logger before starting at Celotex in 1965, where he worked diligently until his retirement at the age of 62.
Raymond was united in marriage to Margaret (Selden) Vizina on August 10, 1957. She preceded him in death in 1983. He later found love again and married Ethel Erickson on June 28, 1986, in L’Anse, Michigan, with whom he shared many happy years.
A man of strong community values, Raymond was a member of the Knights of Columbus and dedicated ten years volunteering at St. Vincent. He found great joy in the simple pleasures of life-tending to his vegetable garden, canning his harvest, and spending time outdoors hunting and fishing. Known as a true jack of all trades, he could fix or build just about anything. One of his favorite seasonal traditions was making maple syrup, a craft he took great pride in.
Raymond was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Virginia Vizina; his first wife, Margaret; his sons, Robert Vizina and Daniel Vizina; his brothers, Leonard, Russell, and Donald Vizina; and his sister, Mary Lou Prebelski.
He is lovingly survived by his wife, Ethel Vizina; his children, Gary (Toni) Vizina of L’Anse, Amy Turriff of L’Anse, Michelle (Mike) Yon of Wakefield, Dean (Michele) Velmer of L’Anse, and Bruce (Christie) Velmer of Negaunee; his sister, Helen Clisch of Crystal Falls; his sisters-in-law, Karen Vizina of Baraga, Delores Vizina of Minnesota, and Kathy Vizina of Higgins Lake; as well as numerous grandchildren and many nieces and nephews who will cherish his memory.
A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, at St. Ann’s Catholic Church, 203 Michigan Ave, Baraga, MI. Visitation will take place from 9:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m., with the Mass of Christian Burial beginning at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Ben Rivord officiating, followed by a luncheon in the church hall.
Interment will take place in the spring at L’Anse Evergreen Cemetery.
Raymond will be remembered for his strong work ethic, his love of family, and the quiet, steady way he enriched the lives of those around him.
