High School
Westwood High School’s Ethan Marta has been honored as “Mr. Basketball” by the Upper Peninsula Sportswriters and Sportscasters Association. Marta averaged 28 points and eight rebounds per game for the Patriots this season, and is headed to Michigan Tech in the fall.
Dollar Bay-Tamarack City’s Liam Tourtillot was selected as Division 4 Player of the Year, and the Blue Bolts were honored as Team of the Year after their run to the state tournament semifinals. Dollar Bay’s Jesse Kentala was tabbed as Division 4 Coach of the Year. Tourtillot was also placed on the All-UP Dream Team.
Marta was also named Division 1-3 Player of the Year. Marquette was tabbed as Division 1-2 Team of the Year, and Menominee as Division 3 Team of the Year. Maroons’ coach Sam Larson earned Division 1-3 Coach of the Year honors.

Gibson Cup
The Portage Lake Pioneers retained the Gibson Cup with a 7-2 victory over the Calumet Wolverines last night, sweeping the annual series two games to none. It’s the fourth straight series victory for the Pioneers, who also won this year’s Great Lakes Hockey League regular-season and tournament titles.
College Basketball
South Carolina and UCLA will play for the NCAA Division I women’s basketball title. Last night, the Gamecocks eliminated Connecticut 62-48, and the Bruins ousted Texas 51-44. The championship game will begin tomorrow at 3:30.
Division I men’s semifinals will be played today, with Michigan taking on Arizona, and Connecticut facing Illinois. The title game will be played on Monday.
NHL
The Red Wings entertain the Rangers this afternoon.
Detroit is now tied with Ottawa, Columbus and Philadephia in the race for the final Eastern Conference wild-card playoff berth, although the Senators own the tiebreaker, and the Blue Jackets and Flyers have each played one more game. The Capitals are three standings points off the pace. The Wings have seven regular-season games remaining.
NBA
The Pistons visit the 76ers tonight. Coverage will begin at 6:35 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Bucks lost to the Celtics 133-101 last night. Taurean Prince came off the bench to lead Milwaukee with 18 points.
The Bucks host the Grizzlies tomorrow afternoon.
The NBA has begun an investigation into Milwaukee’s refusal to play Giannis Antetokounmpo in the closing games of the season. Team officials say Antetokounmpo isn’t fit to play, after dealing with a succession of injuries this season. Antetokounmpo says he is healthy enough to play. The league wants to know if the Bucks are tanking intentionally to try to enhance their position in the upcoming draft.
MLB
The Tigers claimed a 4-0 victory in their home opener over the Cardinals yesterday afternoon. Framber Valdez turned in six innings, allowing just three hits and striking out five. Will Vest, Kyle Finnegan and Tyler Holton completed the shutout. Dillin Dingler hit a long two-run homer for Detroit. Riley Greene and Kevin McGonigle each had doubles.
The Tigers host the Cardinals again today. Jack Flaherty will start against Dustin May. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers and Royals were rained out in Kansas City last night. They’ll play a day-night doubleheader today. Chad Patrick will pitch against Luinder Avila in the afternoon game. Brandon Sproat will face Seth Lugo in the evening contest.
Frisbee
This year’s inductees into the International Frisbee/USA Guts Hall of Fame have been announced. This year’s class includes:

They will be enshrined in the Hall during the International Frisbee Tournament July 11th. The International Frisbee/USA Guts Hall of Fame is located on the second floor of the Calumet Colosseum.
