NHL
Dylan Larkin’s return wasn’t enough to keep the Red Wings from falling to the Senators 3-2 last evening. Ottawa scored the first three goals of the game. Dominik Shine put Detroit on the board late in the second period. Larkin narrowed the gap early in the third, but Ottawa held on for the win. John Gibson made 18 saves. The loss drops Detroit into fourth place in the very tight race for the two Eastern Conference wild card playoff berths – two standings points behind the Bruins, and one point behind the Senators and Islanders.

MLB
The Tigers wrapped up their exhibition campaign with an 11-8 victory over the Rockies yesterday. Dillon Dingler and Wenceel Pérez each hit two home runs, and prospect Max Anderson hit one. Justin Verlaner pitched into the fifth, but gave up six runs on eight hits, including two home runs.
The Tigers open the regular season tomorrow at San Diego. Tarik Skubal will start against Nick Pivetta. Coverage will begin at 3:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
Despite the home run, Pérez was among the last group of players sent down to Toledo yesterday. Infielder Jace Jung and outfielder Trei Cruz were also optioned to the Mud Hens. That means that center fielder Parker Meadows has made the opening day roster. So will hot prospect Kevin McGonigle, who earned an infield slot despite never having played above the Double-A level in the minors. McGonigle is not on the Tigers’ 40-man roster, so the team will need to make a move to accommodate him.
The Brewers concluded their preseason with a 4-1 win over the Reds yesterday. Jake Bauers homered. Brandon Sproat tossed four shutout innings.
The Brewers open their season at home against the White Sox tomorrow. Jacob Misiorowski will pitch against Shane Smith.
Milwaukee has picked up reliever Jake Woodford via a trade with the Rays. Tampa Bay will get minor league pitcher K.C. Hunt in exchange. To make room for Woodford on the 40-man roster, outfielder Akil Baddoo was placed on the 60-day injured list. Woodford had a couple of good seasons with the Cardinals several years ago, but has struggled recently in stints with the White Sox, Pirates and Diamondbacks.
