High School
High school boys basketball state champions were crowned Saturday.
- In Division Four, Concord defeated the Frederick Douglass Academy for Young Men 60-47.
- In Division One, Rockford got past East Lansing 54-50.
- In Division Three, Pewamo-Westphalia shaded the Arts and Technology Academy of Pontiac 61-57.
- In Division Two, Freeland shut down Hudsonville Unity Christian 42-32.
College Basketball
The 16th-ranked Michigan Tech men’s basketball team opened the Division II NCAA tournament with an 83-73 victory over Lake Erie Saturday night. Marcus Tomashek led all scorers with 34 points, and Jesse Napgezek added a career-best 20. The Huskies will face Grand Valley State in a regional semifinal game this afternoon at 5:00 at Walsh University.
Northern Michigan’s men’s team outscored Rockhurst 10-2 over the final 32 seconds of the game to pull out an 86-85 victory in their tournament opener. Dylan Kuehl scored 31. Trevor Polite’s free throw with five seconds remaining sealed the win. The Wildcats will face top-seeded Walsh in the other regional semifinal tonight at 7:30.
In the Division II women’s tournament, top-seed Grand Valley eliminated Wayne State 90-70 in a regional semifinal yesterday. The Lakers will face third-seed Northwood for the regional title tomorrow.
College Hockey
The Michigan Tech hockey team’s Central Collegiate Hockey Association tournament run ended with a 7-2 loss at top-seeded Minnesota State Saturday night. The Mavericks pounced early, and led 4-0 before Tom Leppa put the Huskies on the board early in the second period. MSU added three more goals, and Isaac Gordon closed the scoring with a late goal for Tech. Owen Bartoszkiewicz gave up all seven Mavs goals on just 12 shots over the first 34 minutes. Ryan Manzella replaced him, and stopped eight shots before Houghton native Bryant Lee came in for the final minute – his first collegiate appearance.
NHL
The Red Wings dropped their third straight game Saturday night, falling to the Stars 3-2 in overtime. Trailing 2-0 in the third period, Detroit got goals from Simon Edvinsson and Lucas Raymond to force extra time. Thomas Harley netted the game-winner two minutes into overtime. John Gibson made 21 saves, and took the loss.
The Wings host the Flames tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
Injuries continue to plague Detroit’s front lines. Michael Rasmussen is out for at least a week, and Michael Brandsegg-Nygard missed last night’s game. Both were hurt in Thursday’s loss to the Lightning. They joined Dylan Larkin and Andrew Copp on the sideline.
NBA
The Pistons visit the Raptors today. Coverage will begin at 3:05 on 99.3 The Lift.
Isaiah Stewart will miss today’s contest with a left calf strain. Ausar Thompson could return, after missing time with a sprained ankle.
Playing without Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Bucks lost 122-99 to the Hawks yesterday. Ryan Rollins scored 22.
Antetokounmpo’s most recent injury is a left ankle sprain. He’s considered day-to-day.
The Bucks have lost eight of the past nine, and entertain the Pacers this afternoon.
MLB
Matt Vierling had two hits and drove in two runs, as the Tigers shut down the Blue Jays 6-1 in Grapefruit League action Saturday. Tarik Skubal pitched into the fifth, allowed a run on three hits, and struck out seven.

Bad news for former Tigers pitcher Matt Manning, who signed a $1 million deal to pitch in the Korean League this summer. He suffered an elbow injury, and will undergo Tommy John ligament replacement surgery.
The Brewers pasted half of the Rockies 8-4 yesterday in Cactus League play. Jacob Misiorowski allowed two runs over four innings. David Hamilton, Joey Ortiz and Brandon Lockridge homered.
The Brewers will face the Giants this afternoon. Shane Drohan will start for Milwaukee.
Milwaukee starter Quinn Priester will miss at least the first month of the season. He’s dealing with a nerve issue in his wrist.
