High School
High school boys basketball state champions will be crowned today, although none will come to the U.P.
- In Division Four, Frederick Douglass Academy for Young Men, which defeated Dollar Bay-Tamarack City in the semifinals, will face Concord at 10:00.
- In Division One, Rockford takes on East Lansing at 12:15.
- In Division Three, the Arts and Technology Academy of Pontiac, which ousted Menominee in the semifinals, plays Pewamo-Westphalia at 4:30.
- In Division Two, Freeland meets Hudsonville Unity Christian at 6:45.
College Basketball
The Northern Michigan women’s basketball team closed its season with a 77-61 loss to Wayne State in the opening round of the NCAA Division II playoffs last night. Sydney Whitehouse led the Wildcats with 15 points. Northern closes its season with a record of 25-8.
The Warriors will face top-seeded Grand Valley tonight at 7:30 in a regional semifinal. The Lakers dispatched Maryville 83-50 in their opener yesterday. Second-seed Ferris State was upset by seventh-seed Missouri-Saint Louis 70-59.
The Michigan Tech and Northern men’s teams begin NCAA tournament play today at Walsh University in North Canton, Ohio. The Huskies are seeded third, and will open against sixth-seed Lake Erie at noon. The Wildcats are seeded fifth, and will face fourth-seed Rockhurst at 7:30.
College Hockey
The Michigan Tech hockey team plays at Minnesota State in a Central Collegiate Hockey Association tournament semifinal game tonight at 7:07. The Mavericks are the top seed, and the Huskies are seeded fourth. Augustana visits Saint Thomas for the other semifinal this afternoon. The winners will play one game for the Mason Cup Friday night. The highest remaining seeded team will host.
NHL
The Red Wings will try to break their four-game losing streak when they visit the Stars tonight. Coverage will begin at 7:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
The Pistons declawed the Grizzlies 126-110 last evening. Jalen Duren had 30 points and 13 rebounds. Cade Cunningham scored 17, and had 15 assists.
The Pistons visit the Raptors tomorrow. Coverage will begin at 3:05 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Bucks visit the Hawks this afternoon.
MLB
The Tigers’ spring woes continued with a 7-5 loss to the Pirates in Grapefruit League play last night. Casey Mize was torched for six runs over three innings, and took the loss.
The Tigers face the Blue Jays today. Tarik Skubal will start against Max Scherzer. Coverage will begin at 1:00 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Brewers fell 13-4 to half of the Athletics yesterday in Cactus League play. Kyle Harrison was mauled for six runs over four innings.
The Brewers will face the Rockies this afternoon. Jacob Misiorowski will start for Milwaukee.
NFL
The Lions have added some depth at tight end by signing eight-year veteran Ty Conklin. Conklin is looking for a bounceback year, after struggling last season with the Chargers.
Detroit has also inked a one-year deal with cornerback Roger McCreary, who played for the Titans and the Rams last season.
