High School
The Dollar Bay-Tamarack City boys basketball team is headed to East Lansing. The Blue Bolts dispatched previously unbeaten Pickford 55-46 in their Division Four quarterfinal match last night. They’ll face the Frederick Douglass Academy for Young Men from Detroit in a semifinal game tomorrow at 5:30 at the Breslin Center. Douglass eliminated Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes 76-33 in their quarterfinal game last night.
Concord and Wyoming Tri-Unity Christian will play in the other Division Four semifinal.
Menominee is also headed south. The Maroons downed Beal City 64-42 in a Division Three quarterfinal last night. They’ll play the Arts and Technology Academy of Pontiac in one semifinal tomorrow at noon. The Flint New Standard Academy will face Pewamo-Westphalia in the other.
Girls regional champions will be determined tonight…
- In Division Four, Ewen-Trout Creek meets Ishpeming at 6:00 at Westwood High School. The winner will face either Newberry or Indian River Inland Lakes in the quarterfinals next week.
- In Division Three, Menominee plays Roscommon at Newberry High School. The winner will take on either Evart or Morley-Stanwood.
College Hockey
Three Michigan Tech hockey players have earned all-conference honors from the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. Stiven Sardarian was a unanimous choice on the All-CCHA First Team and was joined by Jack Anderson. Max Koskipirtti was named to the All-CCHA Second Team.
Northern Michigan goaltender Oliver Auyeung-Ashton was named to the All-CCHA Rookie Team.
NHL
The Red Wings couldn’t hold a late lead, and suffered a 4-3 loss to the Panthers last night. Carter Verhaeghe scored two goals in the final 90 seconds to get the win for Florida. Patrick Kane, newcomer Justin Faulk and Marco Kasper scored for Detroit. John Gibson made 24 saves.
The Wings visit the Lightning tomorrow night. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
The Pistons broke their four-game losing streak by routing the Nets 138-100 last evening. Jalen Duren scored 25 points. Cade Cunningham had 21, plus 15 assists.
The Pistons host the 76ers tomorrow.
The Bucks lost to the Suns 129-114. Kyle Kuzma scored 33.
The Bucks visit the Heat tomorrow.
MLB
The Tigers picked up just their fourth win of the spring yesterday, defeating the Red Sox 7-2 in Grapefruit League action. Riley Greene and Corey Julks homered. Ty Madden pitched into the fourth, and gave up a run on two hits.
The Tigers face the Twins this afternoon.
Starter Troy Melton will not open the season with Detroit. He’s been placed on the 60-day injured list with sore elbow.
The Brewers had yesterday off, and play the Reds this afternoon.
