Major Farley leaves the CLK JROTC program in good hands, capping off a 28-year career at the school over the weekend. While on air, Copper Kings broadcaster Jeff Harju spoke with Major Farley about the Calumet JROTC program’s history and future.
“First Sergeant Mark Powell, he’s still a main figure in the program. And he’s got a new partner, Jonathon Leiter,” Farley said.
Continuously in operation since 1917, the JROTC program at CLK Schools is one of the oldest programs in the nation. Farley oversaw the ice-skating color guard, and in 2012 the students earned top honors at the Leadership and Academic Bowl National Championship.
“Just many other accomplishments, oh team accomplishments and individual accomplishments. I’d like to mention Lewis Nagel, he’s on the hockey team,” Farley shared, extending congratulations to a student in the JROTC program. “He just was announced as the Michigan State Cadet of the Year for the Sons of the American Revolution. And his sister got the same award a few years ago, so we’re really proud of Lewis.”
JROTC is a leadership and character program designed to help students become more engaged citizens. There are nearly 1,700 programs active across the United States. Students in the program often perform color guard duties at sporting and school ceremonial events, organize Veterans Day activities or work with area veterans’ organizations, operate drill exercises and engage in classroom programs.
