In high school boys basketball last night…
- Houghton smothered Hancock 71-24 in their Wing Ding matchup. The Gremlins held the Bulldogs to just one point in the second quarter, and three points in the fourth. Terry Nolan led Houghton with 25 points, and Jack Cooke and Alex Hebert each added 13. Gage Chynoweth scored 12 for Hancock, and Isaac Wanhala chipped in 11.
- Chassell downed Lake Linden-Hubbell 69-42. Brayden Larson led the Panthers with 27 points, and Luke Tarvis added 22. Josh Daavettila paced the Lakes with 20.
- Baraga cruised past Ontonagon 64-43.
- Ewen-Trout Creek lost to Ironwood 69-37.
- Forest Park overpowered Superior Central 72-27.
In girls games…
- Houghton trailed by 11 after the first quarter, but came back to claim a 58-53 Wing Ding victory over Hancock. The Gremlins outscored the Bulldogs 21-8 in the final quarter. Ellie Hainault led Houghton with 19 points, Ruby Zawada had 14, and Mia Lawson 13. Alecia Aho netted 20 for Hancock, and Lucy Biekkola 13.
- L’Anse buried Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 74-40.
- Baraga got past Ontonagon 60-52.
- Ewen-Trout Creek stifled Ironwood 60-10.
- West Iron County eased past Forest Park 41-38.

The Houghton swim team swept its meet against Ishpeming yesterday.
- The boys took a 118-60 victory. Alex Svanidze won the 200 freestyle, Anderson Limkemann the 50 freestyle, Kameron Johnson the 100 freestyle,
William Jiang the 500 freestyle, Tate Evans the 100 breaststroke, and Houghton also captured all three relays. - The girls claimed a 127-57 win. Delaney Salmi won the 200 freestyle, Shania Aepli the 200 individual medley, Kaitlyn Coponen the 100 butterfly, Aya Keteri the 500 freestyle, Evelyn LaTendresse the 100 Breaststroke, and Houghton also captured all three relays.
College Basketball
Both Michigan Tech basketball teams earned wins against Lake Superior State last night.
- After back-to-back losses last weekend dropped them to 17th in the national rankings, the men’s team used a big second half to blow past the Lakers 96-76. Marcus Tomashek scored 36, and Josh Terrian added 18.
- Kendall Standfest had 25 points, 16 rebounds and 7 assists in the women’s 89-76 win. Alyssa Wypych added 22 points.
Both Tech teams host Saginaw Valley State tomorrow – the women at noon, and the men at 2:00.
Both Northern teams defeated Saginaw Valley State last evening.
- The 16th-ranked men’s team got 32 points from Dylan Kuehl and 24 from Cal Klesmit in an 83-61 victory.
- Jacy Wiesbrod scored 18 in the 14th-ranked women’s team’s 80-69 win.
Both NMU squads entertain Lake Superior State tomorrow.
College Hockey
The Michigan Tech hockey team hosts Augustana for the annual Winter Carnival series this weekend. Tonight’s faceoff is at 7:07, and tomorrow’s is at 5:07.
NHL
The Red Wings are off until February 26th because of the Olympics break.
NBA
Cade Cunningham scored 30, but the Pistons fell to the Wizards 126-117 last night. Jalen Duren left the game early with a sore right knee. He’ll be evaluated today.
The Pistons host the Knicks tonight. Coverage will begin at 7:05 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Bucks entertain the Pacers tonight.
The big basketball trade deadline news was the trade that wasn’t made. After months of speculation, the Bucks hung on to Giannis Antetokounmpo. They did swing a three-team deal, sending Cole Anthony and Amir Coffey to the Suns, and getting forward Ousmane Dieng from the Bulls.
MLB
Tarik Skubal will earn $32 million pitching for the Tigers this summer. Yesterday, an arbitrator chose Skubal’s suggested salary over the $19 million suggested by the team. Skubal will become a free agent at the end of this season.
