A Michigan Technological University doctoral candidate earned honors at the 105th Transportation Research Board’s annual meeting.
In January, Michigan Tech Ph.D. candidate Lei Yin was honored with the first prize award in the student poster competition. Yin also earned recognition with the 2026 IACIP Outstanding Graduate Student Award.
Yin is part of a research group on campus, mentored by Professor of Civil Engineering Zhangping You, focused on advancing sustainable high-performance asphalt materials for pavement applications. The group particularly focuses on projects impacted by challenging climate conditions. The project seeks to find additional uses for tires after the tread has worn down. By grinding up rubber into granules and adding it to an asphalt mixture, the research team hopes to develop a sustainable solution to the increasing cost of road construction and maintenance.
