A new economic impact report shows public universities in Michigan generate nearly $45 billion in new activity each year.
The study published by the Michigan Association of State Universities estimates the 15 public institutions in the state generate $45 billion in economic activity, with Michigan Technological University generating over $972 million in activity alone during 2024.
The activity generated by Michigan’s public institutions is more than 28 times what universities are appropriated by the state and contributes to the existence of over 127,000 jobs in the state.
Michigan Tech President Rick Koubek, who also chairs the MASU board of directors, said students at Michigan universities are not just learning, but driving Michigan’s success, strengthening communities and positioning the state to compete nationally and globally.
