Human trafficking happens online, at schools, at local sporting events and even in neighborhoods at parties. Traffickers target vulnerable people, especially teens.
On Thursday, Jan. 29, the Upper Peninsula Human Trafficking Task Force will screen the film “Ring of Silence” at the Ojibwa Casino in Marquette. The PG-13 film is based on real events that happened to teens in a Michigan high school. The film depicts the real-life events and strategies predators use to isolate victims of human trafficking.
A food reception begins at 5:30 p.m. with the movie starting at 6 p.m. A panel Q&A session will follow with Jessica DeMay, stepmother to Jordyn DeMay, who was sextorted and died by suicide. Other panelists include advocates from the Women’s Center, Marquette Medical Urgent Care, Michigan State Police, Marquette County Sheriff’s Office, Kingsford Public Safety and Northpointe Behavioral Health Services.
The free event is co-sponsored by the Women’s Center and organized by the Zonta Club of Marquette. Counselors and HOPE crisis therapy dogs will be available.
