Due to inclement weather, the Calumet Theatre and Heikinpaiva will reschedule tomorrow’s film and dinner for Club Finndigo to January 30th. Tickets are still available for purchase online.
While Heikinpäivä honors Finnish roots, the local holiday is a unique Finnish American tradition found only in Michigan’s Copper Country. Leading up to Saturday’s festivities, the community embraces Finnish American culture with song, dance, creative arts, and film.
On Friday, the Calumet Theatre will host its annual Club Finndigo event, featuring a dinner and a foreign film screening.
Calumet Theatre Executive Director Nate Jones says the event draws people curious about Finnish life and culture.
“You look at Finland. It’s across the ocean, and you wonder: How do they live? How do they conduct their everyday lives compared to us here in America?” Jones said. “It’s an opportunity to learn and see what others are doing. Plus, it’s in the middle of winter, so it helps with cabin fever during the cold season.”
This year’s film is Fallen Leaves, directed by Aki Kaurismäki. The movie follows classic romantic comedy tropes infused with Finnish humor, making it an entertaining cultural experience.
Those interested in attending Club Finndigo can find ticket prices, menu details, and showtimes online.
Dinner ticket’s cost $25, and ticket to only see the film will cost $5. The ballroom hall will open for dinner at 5pm, and the meal served at 6pm. The screening of Fallen Leaves will begin inside the Claumet Theatre at 7 pm on Friday.
