Concerned citizens will discuss the potential impact of data centers and crypto mining operations during community meetings Sunday in three Upper Peninsula towns.
The “Introduction to Crypto Mining and AI Data Centers: A Community Briefing” will host programs in Sault Ste. Marie, Marquette and Hancock. All three sessions begin at 7 p.m.
Communities across Michigan have faced proposals for large data centers and crypto mining ventures. A proposal in Kalkaska County was withdrawn by the company following significant public opposition in November 2025.
The discussions will feature speakers from community organizations including Michigan United Action and UP North Advocacy. Local groups will join each panel, with Keweenaw Youth for Climate Action participating in the western Upper Peninsula program. The Sierra Club and Rise UP Michigan will appear at the central and eastern region sessions.
Organizers ask residents to register for in-person attendance. Virtual access will be available for those unable to attend, particularly for northern Lower Peninsula residents.
Additional programs are scheduled through April in Marquette and Hancock.
