A really good teacher can make a difference in a student’s direction. Today Michigan Technological University recognized several professionals that make a difference in the classroom and on campus.
The annual tradition recognizes Michigan Tech’s staff for accomplishing the hard work behind the scenes, so professors and students can focus on education. The awards include categories to honor new staff with the Rookie Award, and a Legacy Award to recognize those that have dedicated more than 15 years to the university.
“It’s a lot of people who care about our university, and they’re doing a lot of things that are above and beyond what even their job responsibilities are,” said Laurie Stark, chair of Staff Council at Michigan Technological University.
“And so it makes it very hard to read through pages and pages of nominations. We want to see them recognized for the great things that they’re doing for our students on campus. And so this is my favorite day, and it’s really just really nice to see all the smiles on people as they come up, just to even get their nomination award, much less the award winners when they come.”
Stark says it’s important for institutions to take time and honor the work by employees that help create an environment where students succeed. Without creative, dedicated and qualified teachers and professionals, the university would not function as a premiere center of education in the nation.
Michigan Technological University’s Staff Council was established in 1991 as a service organization focused on supporting the institution’s staff.
