High School
In high school hockey last night…
- Houghton smothered Brighton 6-1. After the Bulldogs took an early lead, a Connor Arko goal tied the game in the second period. The Gremlins blew the contest open in the third period, as Jack Sayen scored a hat trick, Arko got his second of the game, and Gage Gullstrand added an exclamation point. Brycyn Nettel made 16 saves.
- Calumet spotted Forest Hills Central an early goal, then scored three straight to take a 3-1 victory. Brady Boberg tied the game late in the second period, and Nate Londo knocked in the game-winner just before the period expired. Drake Niemela’s late tally sealed the win. Beau Jukuri made 22 saves.
- Jeffers overpowered Sault Ste. Marie 8-4. Brogan Turner had a hat trick with two of the goals short-handed, Max Nordstrom scored twice, and Carson L’Esperance, Griffin Heinonen and Hudson Heinonen each found the net once. Kasen Helminen made 16 saves.

- Dollar Bay-Tamarack City lost 92-54 at Marquette.
- Lake Linden-Hubbell fell to Wakefield-Marenisco 63-54.
In girls action last night…
- Baraga stopped Houghton 52-40. Ellie Hainault and Ruby Zawada each had 10 points for the Gremlins. Kara Roberts of the Vikings led all scorers with 26 points, and Mya Hendrickson added 23.
- Calumet shut down Westwood 47-25.
Houghton opened the Alpine skiing season yesterday at Norway. Team results were not reported, but Laura Lucak of the Gremlins took a 4th place finish in the women’s giant slalom.
College Hockey
At the Desert Hockey Classic in Tempe, Arizona, Air Force scored five goals in the first period, and jetted past Michigan Tech 8-2. Elias Jansson and Carson Latimer scored for the Huskies. Owen Bartoszkiewicz started the game and gave up four goals over the first 8:30. Ryan Manzella replaced him, and gave up the other four goals while making 26 saves.
The Huskies will take on Alaska Anchorage in the consolation match today. Air Force will meet host Arizona State for the championship tonight.
The Northern Michigan University hockey team skates at Lake Superior State tonight and tomorrow night.
College Basketball
The fifth-ranked Michigan Tech men’s basketball team dropped a taut 79-75 decision to Grand Valley State yesterday. Josh Terrian had a career-best 19 points.
The MTU women’s team couldn’t climb out of an early hole, and fell to the top-ranked Lakers 73-53. GVSU enjoyed a 10-point lead at the end of the opening quarter, then outscored the Huskies 23-10 in the final quarter. Ella Mason led Tech with 20 points.
Both MTU teams will entertain Davenport University this afternoon – the women at 1:00, and the men at 3:00.
The NMU women’s team shut down Davenport 73-46 yesterday. Jacy Weisbrod scored 15 points, and passed the 1,000 point mark for her career.
The Wildcats men’s team swamped Davenport 101-65. Dylan Kuehl scored 33, including five of NMU’s team-record 21 three-pointers.
Both Northern squads host Grand Valley State today.

The Calumet Wolverines skate at Eagle River tonight.
NHL
The Red Wings host the Penguins today. Coverage will begin at 11:45 on 99.3 The Lift.
NBA
The Pistons visit the Cavaliers tomorrow afternoon.
Giannis Antetokounmpo’s dunk with four seconds remaining gave the Bucks a 122-121 victory over the Hornets last night. Antetokounmpo finished with 30 points and 10 rebounds.
The Bucks visit the Kings tomorrow night.
NFL
The Lions conclude their disappointing season tomorrow at Chicago. Coverage will begin at 3:20 on 99.3 The Lift.
The Packers wrap up their regular season tomorrow with a 1:00 game at Minnesota. Win or lose, Green Bay will have the seventh NFC playoff position, so the Packers will start backup Clayton Tune at quarterback. Jordan Love has cleared concussion protocol, and will be available if needed. Malik Willis is nursing a shoulder injury. J.J. McCarthy will return from his hand injury to start for Minnesota.
