The Western Upper Peninsula will be represented at one of the nation’s premier semiquincentennial events next year.
The Marty’s Goldenaires Drum and Bugle Corp from Bessemer has accepted an invitation to march in the National Memorial Day Parade in Washington, D.C.
The Goldenaires are familiar and frequent performers at parades and festivals across the U.P. and northern Wisconsin.
The group was founded in 1950, and was led by local band director and Navy veteran “Marty” Lamoreux. It suspended operations following Lamoreux’s death in 1968, but was revived for the nation’s bicentennial in 1976, and has continued since.
Other highlights from the group’s history include performances at the National American Legion Convention, the Michigan state capitol, and Lambeau Field.
