High School
Keweenaw Peninsula teams dominated the opening day of the expanded MacInnes Holiday Classic.
This year’s event includes eight teams, and is being treated as a showcase, rather than a tournament, as in years past.
On Saturday…
- Hancock shut down the East Side Stars from the Lansing area 9-1, in a game that ended early because of the mercy rule.
- Jeffers Jets pounced early, then held on to defeat De Pere 7-3. The Jets scored five times in the opening period, while outshooting the Voyageurs 11-4. De Pere regrouped and outscored Jeffers 3-2 over the final two stanzas, with shots basically even between the two teams. Tage Rajala scored the first of his two goals less than three minutes into the game. Brogan Turner found the net 23 seconds later, and Carson L’Esperance and Griffin Heinonen also scored during the opening period. Palmer Anderson and Cameron Anderson added later goals. Max Nordstrom had four assists. Kasen Helminen stopped 24 shots.
- Houghton blanked the Capital City Capitals 5-0. After a scoreless opening period, Liam Frick netted the game-winner early in the second, and Noah Maillette knocked another off the ensuing face-off just 12 seconds later. The Gremlins broke the game open in the third period, with a goal by Brody Donnelly and two more by Maillette to complete a hat trick. Cooper Flachs made 17 saves.
- Calumet closed day one with a 3-1 victory over Livonia Stevenson. Dylan Crouch scored in the first period, Drake Niemela netted the eventual game-winner in the second, and Robert Loukus sealed the win with a late empty-netter. Beau Jukuri made 24 saves.
Today’s schedule has been upended by the Blizzard Warning.
- Jeffers will take on the East Side Stars at noon.
- Hancock will play DePere 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
- The games between Houghton and Livonia Stevenson, and Calumet and Capital City, have been canceled to allow the visiting teams to return home before the storm arrives.
