In the fall, Geek Up brought together fandoms from comics, movies, video games and more. During the 2025 event, Geek Up encouraged attendees to contribute to a fundraiser supporting Copper Shores Meals on Wheels.
Geek Up co-founder Shana Porteen says in the past the event has raised funds to support the Omega House, Humane Society and Unite Mental Health. She adds the Geek Up board of directors chose Meals on Wheels after hearing about the need in the community.
“Again, it’s a small community, so people talk and they were like, look, they really need help and we were going to do the event,” Porteen said. “And so it just became, I think, a natural partnership that they really needed us to come out for them and the community did in droves.”
“We see a yearly growth with the amount of seniors that are needing our help. And with the way the economy is, we’re definitely looking at more and more seniors facing food insecurities,” said Jessica Mills, program assessor for Meals on Wheels. “And with donations like this and community support, we’re able to come together as a community.”
Mills says a single meal costs on average $13. Mills adds that donation of $20,000 will feed up to seven seniors for a full year. Donations such as that from Geek Up make significant impacts on programs and fighting food insecurity in the Copper Country.
