The tiny village continues its month-long Christmas celebration Saturday with activities throughout the community. Residents will finish last-minute shopping while some visit the Keweenaw National Historic Park’s Calumet 150th open house. Families will make memories in Agassiz Park with free dog sled rides, hot dogs, hot chocolate and coffee.
“It’s awesome to see everybody come out and just celebrate kind of like kickoff of CopperDog and like help celebrate Christmas and Calumet,” said Krissy Tepsa, volunteer coordinator for CopperDog. “It’s just fun because the dogs love to see the kids and the kids really love to see those dogs too.”
Tom Bauer from Otter River Sled Dog Training and Wilderness Center will bring his teams, with assistance from the Mushing Club at Michigan Tech. Santa may also make an appearance.
Today, CopperDog opens its volunteer portal, 70 days before the big race weekend. Tepsa expects board members will stop by the kids’ dog sled rides Saturday, offering new volunteers a chance to ask questions about different roles and involvement opportunities.
The kids’ rides start at noon Saturday. Learn more about Christmas in Calumet events here.
