In hockey action Saturday…
- At the D-III Showcase in Gaylord, Jeffers skated to a 4-4 tie with Grand Rapids Catholic Central. The Jets got first-period goals from Griffin Heinonen, Cameron Anderson and Carson L’Esperance. Brogan Turner’s power play tally in the second period staked them to a 4-3 lead, but the Cougars tied the game early in the third period. L’Esperance, Turner and Blake Heltunen each had two assists.
- Houghton suffered their third straight loss, 6-2 at Escanaba. The Eskymoes built a 6-0 lead before goals by Liam Frick and Connor Arko finally put the Gremlins on the scoreboard. Cooper Flachs gave up the first three Escanaba goals in the opening seven minutes, and was replaced by Brycyn Nettel.
Both Houghton swim teams finished second in a three-way match against Marquette and Sault Ste. Marie in Marquette Saturday.
In a very tight competition, the boys finished just three points behind the Sentinels, and six points ahead of the Blue Devils. Several Gremlins posted qualifying times for the U.P. championships, including Kameron Johnson in the 200 freestyle, Isaac Neva in diving, William Jiang in the 100 butterfly, and Tate Evans in the 500 freestyle.
The girls competition wasn’t as close, with the Gremlins falling to the Sentinels 133-107. The Soo team finished a distant third. New championship qualifiers for the Gremlins include Lydia Williams in the 200 and 100 freestyles, Meg Ruohonen in Diving, and Shania Aeplin in the 100 breaststroke.

MLB
The Tigers are adding a veteran closer to their bullpen. Sixteen-year veteran Kenley Johnson has reportedly agreed to a one-year contract. With 476 career saves, Johnson has more than any other active Major League pitcher, and is three shy of moving past Lee Smith into third place on the all-time list. He recorded 29 saves for the Angels last season. The deal is said to be worth $11 million, and includes a team option for a second season.
The teams haven’t confirmed it yet, but there are reports that the Brewers have traded outfielder Isaac Collins and reliever Nick Mears to the Royals. In exchange, they get reliever Angel Zerpa. Zerpa has spent the past two seasons in the K.C. bullpen, last year throwing a career-best 64 2/3 innings, with a 4.18 ERA.
