A L’Anse man has been convicted of assault with a dangerous weapon and assault resulting in serious bodily injury in federal court.
On Friday, a jury in the Federal District Court of West Michigan convicted 45-year-old L’Anse man Kyle Lee Dean of assault with a dangerous weapon and assault resulting in serious bodily injury for an incident in January 2024. U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Michigan Timothy Verhey expects Dean will appear at sentencing in 2026.
On Jan. 20, 2024, Kyle Dean was arrested within the L’Anse Reservation of the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community after a fist fight turned dangerous when he stabbed a victim nearly one dozen times.
Testimony at trial noted without efforts performed by first responders with Baraga County Memorial Hospital and UPHS Marquette, the victim likely would have died from injuries sustained in the altercation.
U.S. Attorney Verhey says his office will prioritize ensuring tribal communities are safe and will hold individuals that commit violent crimes accountable.
