Cross Country skiing at Swedetown
Powder has landed across the Copper Country, and winter sports enthusiasts are ready for the season.
Over the weekend, Mont Bohemia opened its advanced-level ski hill in Lac La Belle. The Midwest gem has grown in popularity over the past five years, introducing additional accommodations for skiers and those choosing to stay behind in the hot tub.
Mont Ripley expects to open this weekend. On Saturday, the ski hill in Hancock will open after cleaning up damage from the recent snowstorm.
While downhill skiing has many fans, the Copper Country also enjoys cross-country sports. Swedetown Trails has some trails near the chalet groomed and ready for the season. The Swedetown Trails Club and other cross-country ski and snowshoe clubs have been hard at work early in the winter.
Just before Thanksgiving, the region felt winter rush in with its first snowstorm that dropped 16 inches in Keweenaw County to start the season.
Michigan Tech Trails has groomed most trails already. The Tolkien trails for dog walkers on the system have not been groomed. The Chassell Snowshoe trails are ready for people enjoying nature, as are the Chassell Ski Trails. The Hancock Trails Club has also needed time to prepare trails for the public after the snowstorm.
