Communities throughout the Copper Country have implemented overnight parking rules. Each winter cities, townships, and villages in the Keweenaw Peninsula begin overnight parking polices on November 1st.
The regulations limit parking along side streets and main roads overnight, to allow snowplows room to operate. The policy stays in effect each year until the spring, with rules lifted after April 15th. Restrictions on overnight parking occur between 2am and 8am each day from November to April.
Houghton County Road commissioner Kevin Harju says these restrictions allow all road commission crews space to safely remove snow from roadways. Vehicles found in violation of overnight parking restrictions are subject to being removed and towed at the expense of the vehicle owner. If a vehicle is not removed, plows cannot serve the roadway, and a section will remain unplowed until the vehicle has been moved or towed. Road commissions keep roads safe in the winter. Drivers should keep their distance when traveling behind a snowplow and should watch for chunks of snow that may be left behind. Harju adds crews have an important role in plowing each winter, cleaning roadways for people to get to work, home or travel to their next destination.
