The save the Ruppe Initiative marks a large step forward to preserve an iconic facade in calumet. The bring back calumet taskforce recently announced it has received a 10,000-dollar gift from a Ruppe family member that will contribute toward the 200,000-project goal. The gift brings the fundraising aspect to the initiative up to 58,000 dollars raised so far. This contribution underscores the building’s lasting connection to calumet history and the growing community movement behind the efforts to preserve the town’s architectural heritage.
Member of the taskforce Jeff Ratcliffe says the gift from the Ruppe family affirms these buildings are worth saving and continues to inspire generations of calumet residents. 211 5th Street was originally the home of the P Ruppe and Son General merchandise store in the late 1800s, and over the decades the building served many roles while the sandstone facade stood as a recognizable part of fifth street’s historic streetscape. Over the course of the saving, the Ruppe initiative’s initial work to clear out debris volunteers removed seven tons of refuse over 200 work hours. As well as completed work to shore and stabilize the structure and apply a roof sealant to prevent further degradation.
