Houghton’s council will ask the planning commission to consider late changes to a project before potentially rezoning the site. Last night, the Houghton city council reviewed summary reports from the city planning commission’s September meetings.
Councilors hesitated to make any decision, to allow more time and more discussion to happen between the public, planning commission and developer. Councilor Mike Needham moved to return the lake shore drive rezoning from RSV to R-3 to the planning commission to consider chances to the proposed development idea.
Brian Kangas of Houghton Quality Housing recently addressed several points of contention from the public at recent public hearings in order to fit the project’s initial plans into place where neighbors, the city, and Devlopment can happen. Including considering a new location for the access road for condominiums and limiting the development’s size so as to not overlap with nearby single-family homes.
The planning commission will take up the council’s task on October 28th. Councilor Needham included his motion, encouraging the commission to hold a second public hearing to gather more information from neighbors, the public, and developers.
Additional action by the city council approved the November and December meeting schedule.
